Does solid wood crack or discolour on the wall? The honest answer

The short answer: well-dried and well-finished solid wood stays stable on the wall, including in a home with underfloor heating. What you may expect is that the colour softly changes over the years, because wood is a natural material that responds to light. That is no flaw but the proof that you have something living in your home.

Below is what really happens to wood on the wall, and what we do in the atelier to prepare every piece for it.

Does wood move? Yes, and that is accounted for

Wood absorbs moisture in summer and releases it in winter, moving minimally as it does. Problems only arise when wet or poorly dried wood is used, or when a piece is carelessly glued together from loose parts. In the atelier we therefore work exclusively with thoroughly dried solid wood, and every layer is sanded by hand and finished with a transparent satin coat that keeps the moisture level stable.

On the back we also mount metal U-profiles. They keep the work permanently flat and absorb the natural movement of the wood, so the piece can follow the seasons without cracking or warping. It is invisible craftsmanship, but it is the reason a work still hangs as true after twenty years as on day one.

Underfloor heating and dry winter air

Underfloor heating itself is no issue for wall art: the heat sits in the floor, the work hangs on the wall. What wood does respond to is extremely dry air, which occurs in every heated home in winter, with or without underfloor heating. Aim for a humidity between 40 and 60 percent, which is also most comfortable for people. One spot deserves attention: directly above a burning radiator or wood stove, hot bone-dry air rises straight along the wall. Keep generous distance there, or choose another wall.

Does wood discolour in the sun?

Every wood type slowly changes tone under daylight. Walnut gradually becomes slightly lighter and warmer in direct sunlight, oak and beech gain a deeper golden glow, and mahogany deepens its reddish brown. That process takes years, and even daylight keeps it uniform. Only harsh direct sun hitting one part of the work day after day can create local difference. So preferably hang a work on a wall that catches no full midday sun, and if in doubt turn a round work a quarter turn once a year.

Care is almost no care

A dry, soft cloth along the layers is enough; the satin coat keeps dust and finger marks out. Leave cleaning agents, furniture oil and damp cloths aside, as they can affect the finish. There is truly nothing more to it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wooden artwork hang in the bathroom or kitchen?

In the kitchen certainly, outside the direct splash zone of the stove. For the bathroom: in a well-ventilated bathroom with normal moisture swings much is possible, but above the bath or in the shower area itself we advise against it.

What about moving house or storage?

Store the work upright, in its original packaging, in a heated room. An unheated garage or damp cellar is the only environment where solid wood truly struggles.
